Dentists Freezing

I hate dentists. I always dread heading to my next appointment. I always wonder what they are going to find next. Today was my latest appointment and I dreaded it just like the rest of my visits.

The biggest difference was that they found a cavity that will need to be filled. Ugh. It’s not necessarily the sound of the drill I hate, but rather the vibration in my head, and the smell.

I also detest the freezing they have to use. For whatever reason the dentists have to use extra freezing to get the effect they need, so it lasts a really long time, and the unfreezing process always weirds me out.

Blech. I really hope that Sprout gets Sox’s good teeth.

Single Gorgeous

This past weekend some of Sox’s family was visiting, and they noticed that a house plant of ours was about to flower. Apparently the bloom only lasts a single day.

Sure enough yesterday when I got home it was in bloom. Gorgeous. I snapped a few pictures. This morning when I got up the bloom was done. Very glad I was able to get some pictures.

All the pics are here.

Update: this is called an Apostle Plant or Neomarica gracilis. You can see from this University of Hawaii Botany page that their picture of a flower looks exactly like mine.

Approximating Investment

Riding home from work last night I saw the price of gas had risen to 101.9. This got me to thinking about the money I spent on the bike. I keep wondering if I spent too much, and if we could really afford it.

Approximating the price of the bike at $400 ($350 + taxes)
Set the gas price at $1.109

$400 will buy me approx 360 Litres of gas.

My truck has a 70 L tank. 360/70 will yield approx 5 full tanks of gas. If I drove the truck to work every day, I would fill up every 2 weeks (approx). This means that in 10 weeks (2.5 months) of riding I will have worked off the price of the bike if gas prices remained constant. This doesn’t take into account, what I would have to pay for parking. The spot we used to rent was $90 a month.

Let’s take into account the parking spot price. Two months of driving would cost me $180 + $310 (4 tanks of gas), this totals $490. Less than 2 months of riding.

Not a bad investment.

What if I took the bus instead of driving? Bus passes are currently around $65 a month. It would take me around 6 months of riding to be cost effective.

Again, not bad. The bike is just as quick as the bus, and way more convenient. The math makes me feel a lot better about buying this bike.

Flat Dilemma

*sigh*

So I bought a new bike on the weekend.  This is going to be used as my commuter bike for getting to and from work. I found a Louis Garneau road bike, in my size for a pretty decent price. Not sure how old it is, but it is a steel frame, that isn’t what I would call light.

I’m pretty happy with my purchase.

Yesterday after bringing it home, I noticed the front tire was flat. No big deal. I had a spare tube, and since I was going to be installing some fenders anyway, fixing the flat wouldn’t be a big deal.

Well, the fenders didn’t fit. Bummer. That took me a while to really figure that one out. I got the front one on OK, but the back clearance was just too tight. Off came the fenders, the bike came off the stand, and upstairs I went to get cleaned up.

Fast forward to this morning. Getting ready for work I was all psyched to ride the new bike in. Stepping into the garage I noticed the front tire was flat again. It dawned on me that I hadn’t checked the rim. It most likely needs new rim tape. Crap. I will have to pick some up today, and a couple more tubes. Tomorrow I should be able to ride it in though. Hopefully the weather holds for tomorrow, or until I can figure out my fender dilemma.

Requisite Adult

so tall and grown up

I feel like such an adult today. After getting up, I spent some time with the family (feels a little weird to write that). Sox and I got 4/5 of us family members (me, Sox, Sprout, and Yoshi) bundled up, and headed out for a bit. Starbucks was in order this morning, so after picking up our requisite drink, we took Yoshi for a walk at a nearby park.

He tore around like he hadn’t walked in a long time, and only got lost from us one time. Scares me every time he does that. He will take off so he can’t see or hear us, then somehow gets lost on the way back. He will then get frantic, and start heading back to where we started from (even if we aren’t heading in that direction). After retrieving the dog with the help of some other park go-ers, we were much relieved.

so tall and grown up

One the way home from the park we stopped to get some milk. Sigh. I can remember mom doing things like this when I was a kid. 🙂

Once home I got out the lawn mower for the first time this year. Yeesh, the yard was a mess. Branched everywhere, pine cones strewn about, weeds, large thick clumps of grass. The first mow is always the hardest. Thankfully I was able to get through it without the battery dieing (we have a battery powered electric mower).

After the grass I wrenched on my new commuter bike. Too bad for me the fenders I bought don’t fit properly. I have two options. The first is to return the fenders, and buyer a different variety that won’t offer the same protection, or I can buy new tires for the bike that aren’t as tall as the current ones. Still have to ponder that one.

Still lots of time left in the day, so I am trying to get caught up a little on my RSS reading. I am contemplating paring down my feed list. At the very least I will have to be more diligent about just marking a whole category as read. My programming feeds are getting further and further behind. There are a lot of articles I want to read, but there just isn’t enough time. If only there were 30 hours a day, and 8 days in a week!

All in all I am feeling like an adult. Not sure how that happened. 😉

Commuter Settling

looking for a commuter

I am shopping for a commuter bike these days, and it is hard. I don’t have much of a budget, so that means looking for a used bike. This can be a little tricky if you don’t know what you are looking for in a used bike.

I found a used rental bike at Marty’s Mountain Cycle, but I was hemming and hawing over it. Would I be happy with this one? Would it suit me? Could I convert it into a commuter? It had almost all the necessities. The rear wheel did not have a quick release, and that was a huge drawback. The fit was OK, but I wouldn’t call it comfortable. I certainly wasn’t enthused by this bike. I decided to just walk away. Any time I settle for something, whether it be a bike part, clothing, or even a CD, I am rarely happy with it. I feel better now that I know I won’t get it.

Of course this means I am still without the bike I need. Frustrating, but better than settling for something, and not being happy with my decision.

So, if any of you see, have, or hear of a decent, large sized commuter bike, let me know. I am in the market for a new bike.
