Swim Activity

Another early morning swim for me in which I managed 700m. I did 3X100m and 2X200m swims. I know I could have swam longer, and maybe next Thursday I will try for more than 200M continuous.

I am not sure what my end goal is, but I know that I am not getting a lot of physical activity, and I know I need it. Swimming is pretty easy to do, is close to home, and doesn’t take too much time out of my day. So far the hardest part about swimming is dragging myself out of bed.

This morning one thing really stood out about getting to the pool at 6:15. I was (by far) the youngest person in the pool. In the gym there were lots of people my age, but in the pool I was definitely out of place. Interesting.

Reward Tank

Lost: 1 Tiger Barb fish
Doesn’t answer to the name Stumpy, but that is his name
Reward if found.

As mentioned in a previous entry my Tiger Barbs haven’t been playing well with one another. Shortly after that post I was down to 2 barbs, but Stumpy slowly recovered. His fin grew back and he seemed happy in the tank.

Then, last night I was feeding the fish and didn’t see Stumpy. He has completely disappeared. There is no trace of him, not one little piece of carcass. It is very odd

Cowichan Morning

This past weekend Sox, Sprout and I headed up to Cowichan for an overnight stay at the deGoede cabin. As Sox mentioned, the weather wasn’t ideal, but it made for a relaxing time “in”. Big E and Sprout played very well together allowing Sox and I to relax. I took my camera gear but of course it was too wet to really take it out.

One really, nice side effect for me was to catch up on some quality sleep. The whole previous week I had been having bad sleeps. The night at the cabin solved that. A perfectly darkened room, no city noises, and a comfy bed. I felt great in the morning.

Sleep Swimming

After a bad nights sleep I woke up at 4:30 am today. When I finally got back to sleep, my alarm went off reminding me that I had planned to get up and go for a swim. Dragging myself out of bed was hard but I forced myself to do it.

This swim I only completed 500m, but I did 3 100m continuous lengths during it. It may have been more of a workout, but I was done after 500. After swimming I had a bit of a soak in the hot tub which was a nice relaxing way to start the day.

Ritual Swim

Saturday’s I have a new morning ritual. I go for a swim, then Sox drops Sprout off at the pool for his swim lesson. After the lesson we stop at the cafeteria for a snack before walking home.

Yesterday I managed to swim 600 or 700 m before the lesson. It wasn’t continual, but it was a good workout. The first 300 were the hardest, and I think that I got warmed up and was able to keep going for the rest of my swim. I probably could have done more too, but I think that next time I go I will work on swimming more continually instead of distance.

Anyone have any tips on how to keep track of how much distance you have covered while swimming? I always lose track of it.

Sentra Merging

To The Dipshit in the Nissan Sentra yesterday morning:

Hey, you set a great example for your family while driving. Remember the construction zone downtown on Johnson near Douglas? Well, the lane I was in was closed and I was merging over. That is why my truck was headed for your lane, AND I had my turn signal on to indicate this. I thought it seemed pretty obvious I was on my way to the left lane.

I suppose you thought otherwise and this is why you continued to advance, almost hitting my truck, then honked at me. WTF dude? Try paying attention and respecting the rules of the road. I don’t care if you are in a big hurry (as evidenced by the rest of your drive to Oak Bay), you don’t have the right to be a jerk.

Conditions Steep

I got out for a ride at the dump today. What a blast. I was a little concerned that my lack of fitness would cause some issues, but I actually felt pretty great for most of the ride. The conditions were ideal too. Dry, but not dusty, and lots of traction to go around. We ended up on a trail called Grinder and traction is key on that trail since it has lots of steep rock faces. I had a couple small bails on the day, but nothing serious.

This ride reminded me of way back when, when I used to ride a lot. It was a technical ride, not too much stopping for breaks, and lots of good riding. I love rides like that.

I was pretty pooped by the end of the ride, so I stopped at the bagel place for some food and coffee before heading home.
