Appointment Shopping

nice sunset in Victoria BC

Tonight Sue, Yoshi and I are heading to the mainland to visit some friends, and for an appointment up in Squamish.

We shall be on the 7pm ferry to Tsawassen. Tomorrow, after Squamish we will head to Vancouver to see Dean and Jennifer, then we will go out for dinner with the Dalzells.

Sunday we get a nice leisurely day. Most likely a little shopping in Vancouver, then head home when we feel like it.

Unfortunately no riding or boarding for me this weekend. There will probably be a few opportunities for picture taking though.

Lab Rowing

my muddylaces

Today I took Yoshi out to the Elk Lake fields. What a soup! The fields were all drenched, and there were many mud pits and bogs. Pretty crazy.

When we first got there Yoshi played with a black Lab named Isaac. Very cute lab. Isaac’s owner had a Chuck It, so he threw for Yoshi and Isaac for about 15 minutes or more while he and I talked.

After the retrieving Yoshi and I walked/waded our way down to the rowing club, then made our way back to the truck following the lake shore. In all we were out for close to 2 hours. He sure slept soundly this afternoon.

Expecting $75 Ideas

Saturday I had my 100 Ways to Sell Your Photography course. It certainly wasn’t what I was expecting/hoping for. My goals did not mesh with what the instructor was teaching. I want to just go out and shoot lots of nice, interesting pictures then sell them. Most of the class was about selling your photography skills, not your pictures. Many of the ideas presented were to show photographers how to set up photo shoots, something I am not really interested in. I much prefer to wander around looking through the lens and capturing what I see.

I guess I am more interested in the artsy side of photography. Oh well, $75, and 7 hours gone. I did get a couple ideas, but nothing that I plan to implement right away.

Sceptical Servicing

This morning I left my truck at Wille Dodge for its next servicing. A few minutes ago I got a call from “some dude” (I forget his name) at Victoria Nissan. I said: “Sorry, what was your name?”, and after he repeated it I asked “where do you work?”.

“Some dude” (sounding sceptical) says: “you aren’t the Greg Fox I was just talking to a few minutes ago?” 😕

Nope, sorry, wrong one. I told him that the funny part was that my truck was in for servicing today, and that I was expecting a call, just not from a Nissan dealer 😀

Shotgun Cigarette

Last night while walking Yoshi at the park, I was reminded of the really windy walk last week. Then I remembered a strange event that occurred during that walk.

After we left the park, we saw a large line of cars making their way to the dog park. I knew their destination since every single one of the half dozen or so vehicles, had a dog of some sort riding shotgun. It was quite the sight. We continued on, and when Yoshi and I were only a half block from home the strange event occured. During one particularly strong gust I saw, out of the corner of my eye, a strange orange blob, bouncing down the road. I took a closer look. I was really curious, what was thing bright object? As I bent over to examine it, I realized I was staring at a lit cigarette butt.

Just then another gust began to send the butt flying again, so I quickly stomped on it to put it out. Bizzare.

I couldn’t help but think back to the summer and all the forrest fires that BC had. I also remembered Coreman’s post about a moron who carelessly discarded his cigarette during the height of the fire season. Morons abound.

Garbage Fluid

2 truck related items this morning.

The first item shouldn’t need to be voiced, but I will say them anyway. The bed of my truck is not a garbage can! Numerous times I have parked my truck somewhere, only to return and find someone’s garbage tossed into the back. Beer cans, pop bottles, gum wrappers, and empty drinking cups are only a few examples. Are you really that lazy? 99% of the garbage found has come from when I am parked downtown. This means that the dumper is pretty close to a garbage can. It can’t be that much of a hardship to carry your refuse another block or two is it? Frustrating.

The other item, is that while returning from yesterdays boarding trip, I had a weird sensation at one point. I sensed something was up with my truck, so I scanned the dash board to see what was wrong. No red lights, or warnings (except the low washer fluid), and the temp and oil pressure were fine. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw it. The odometer read 100000! Weird. It was pretty cool to see it at exactly one hundred grand, but the circumstances were a little odd. One 123 km’s more, and I will have driven the truck 100000 kms myself. Not bad for a 98. Oh, and I booked it in for its next servicing (not that you care).

Wireless Documentation

I returned the Bluetooth adapter I bought the other day. It was some cool technology, and it was kind of neat that I could hotsync without using the cradle, but I couldn’y get any range out of it.

I have no other wireless devices, yet the Bluetooth adapter could not reach the 15 ft or so through one wall to the living room. That meant that I would only be able to use it in the computer room, which was pointless since I might as well just use the cradle. Also hotsyncing over Bluetooth was noticeably slower than syncing with the cradle.

Surfing the net through Bluetooth was cool, and I must admit that my Tungsten T3 has a gorgeous screen (the graphics downloaded looked amazing), but again it was rather slow. I would rather walk to the computer and load the web page.

Anyway it was fun to play with. I understand better why Bluetooth hasn’t taken off the way people would like. The current implementation was a pain in the butt to figure out, and the Palm documentation was next to nothing. Since it was so complicated, when it didn’t work, I had to try and figure it out myself. That took a while, and was very frustrating (none of the setup was very intuitive, something wireless technologies need to be, for people to find them useful).

Anyway, fun experiment. Back to being wired.

Pounding Breakwater

wind blown water

I took Yoshi for a quick walk after work tonight. Stormy! The wind has been pounding Victoria today, and got even more fierce when the sun started to go down. Yoshi’s ears were flapping all about 🙂

water crashing on the rocks

The cool thing about storms that last is that the parks can get some wicked waves. Tonight the waves crashing onto the breakwater were sending spray right over the breakwater! I had never seen that at the park before. Very cool.

I am a wimp though, and took refuge in the trails. It was only supposed to be a quick walk anyway, but it was fun. I love windy, stormy weather.

Inconsequential Quality

altered wooden box

*sigh* I just got back from Tim Hortons. All I wanted was a Canadian Maple donut, and a cup of coffee. I went with a couple people from work, and while the lady was getting my donuts, I turned to talk with Cliff and Noah.

When we got back to the office I discovered the lady had grabbed a Maple Dip, and not the Canadian Maple I had been expecting.

It really is inconsequential in the grand scheme, but I had been relishing the thought of this donut the walk back to the office. I had built it up in my mind.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed a shift in the donut quality at Tim Hortons?

Dizzy Puddle

Yoshi taking a rest at the park

Lunchtime today was a nice treat. I wasn’t able to take Yoshi to work today, so he stayed home, and at lunch I went home for a visit and a walk. It was short (just under 20 minutes), but he had a great time. We met up with Emma, a Lab mix. She was cute. As soon as she saw Yoshi, she came bounding up to him. Yoshi didn’t see her approach, so when he did notice her, he quickly dropped the stick we has carrying, and they both did the doggy twirl (they walked around in a circle sniffing each other).

Then Yoshi decided Emma was a cool dog, and instigated a playfest with her! 🙂 I was stunned to watch this but it was hilarious. Yoshi woulld zip away, then run at her. Emma would chase Yoshi back. Yoshi would grab the stick, and Emma would chase. Emma would grab the stick and Yoshi would chase. They the two of them dissappeared into the leafless trees and rand round and round and round them, chasing each other until I thought they would be dizzy.

To cool off they zipped to the nearest dirtiest mud puddle and lapped it up like it would evaporate momentarily. Crazy dogs! I love watching playtime like that.

Our other pet, Aphro, goes to the vet for the first time since we got her. We bought a cat carrier yesterday, and we are not relishing the idea of trying to stuff her into it. I am prepared for mortal combat with her. She must get in, and I am sure she will do everything in her power to not go in. I will be totally shocked if she doesn’t spaz. More later I guess.
